Diawali dari pernyataan Rupert Murdoch, seorang pengusaha media pemilik News Corp, sebuah jaringan media dunia yang membawahi antara lain televisi Fox, studio film Fox, pemilik banyak koran di seluruh dunia diantaranya seperti Wall Street Journal, dan termasuk juga situs social network MySpace.com. Murdoch mengancam menghilangkan berita News Corp dari indeks Google, dan direncanakan secara eksklusif muncul di Bing. Untuk kemunculan berita dari NewsCorp itu Microsoft, pemilik search engine Bing, siap membayarnya.
Murdoch menuduh Google mencuri berita dari NewsCorp dan memunculkannya di Google News. Pernyataan Murdoch ini konon katanya dipicu untuk menyelamatkan bisnis koran yang terancam kebangkrutan sejak adanya internet. Sebab siapapun secara mudah dapat mendapatkan berita yang dicarinya lewat search engine.
Meski demikian Google tak gentar dengan ancaman Murdoch. Google tidak masalah dan tidak keberatan sekalipun kemudian harus menyetop mengindeks berita dari website-website milik Murdoch. Google dalam pernyataannya mengatakan,”setiap organisasi media berhak seratus persen untuk memunculkan kontennya di search engine atau pun tidak.”
